Garden in August

It's halfway through the month and I finally got around to taking a photo of the garden. It's a busy time of year.

The potatoes, onions, peas, carrots, melons and cilantro have been harvested and replaced with collards, kale, Michili cabbage, carrots, turnips, radishes, lettuce, spinach, and head cabbage.

Saturday's harvest (L-R): Chinese yard-long beans, a little rhubarb, green beans, slicing tomatoes, a medley of cherry tomatoes, and a good little pile of ground cherries (aka Physalis, husk cherry, Inca berry, Cape gooseberry). Missing from the photo: 5 okra, a half gallon of Michili cabbage and curly green kale.

The okra was eaten immediately. Didn't even make it into the house. The ground cherries and rhubarb went into a lemon bundt cake. Mmmmmmm. The lemon and sugar overpowered everything :( so I'll have to try again with a different ratio. Half the beans went to our neighbor in exchange for jalepenos. The slicing tomatoes will ripen another couple of days on my counter before going into the freezer. Cherry tomatoes will get eaten fresh and donated with the other half of the beans to Solidarity Gardens. Leaf cabbage and kale will get eaten today.

All in all, my garden this year has produced a nice little pile of veg every week. More than we can eat fresh on our own, anyway.

  1. What a beautiful garden. And it's nice to hear how it can be continually producing. I never did that. Looks like a good crop of healthy things.
