Bobby's Sunday Summary
This week has been a good one. I took Friday off. I spent the day with Alice. We went to the swimming pool and we ran some errands. It was rather enjoyable. That night we drove down to St. Louis for our Monthly temple trip. We got a hotel for that night with Bill and Kristen. We were originally supposed to stay at the Marriott that is just a freeway stop away from the temple, but when we got there they were over booked with a world war 2 infantry reunion, so they payed for us to stay a few miles away at the Hilton. It was a nice place, but it did not seem that different from the other hotels tat we have stayed at. After going to the temple on Saturday we went to a children's museum. It was a lot of fun but it made for a very long day.

"Mom Bite"
As a kid, you never want to share food that you really like. We used to tease my mom about her "mom bites" that would always take more than we were willing to share, even when it was her hard work or generosity that made the treat possible. This selfishness doesn't go away when it's your own kid asking for a taste. Oh man. Alice isn't timid, either, about taking the largest possible bite she can wrap her jaw around. Especially when it comes to ice pops. The poor girl has given herself several brain freezes from her own ice pops AND mine. Hmmm.

Bobby's Sunday Summary
This week has been very interesting. Thursday and Friday night we had 5 boys and a chaperone staying with us. They were attending youth conference here. They were extremely well behaved. They even cleaned out our gutters, something that I have been putting off. Friday night there was a bit of a tornado scare. The sirens went off and the radio was reporting that the national wether service said that a tornado was going to hit campus. So instead o putting Alice to bed we all sat huddled in the hallway of our house watching Sesame Street on the computer. It is one of Alice's favorite things to do in the whole world, so it made the siren not so scary. Luckily they got it wrong. The tornado did not form where they expected it to. Two tornados did show up from that storm about 20 miles away from us though. They passed about 2 miles south of a boy scout camp where the boys from our ward were at. No one was hurt at the boy scout camp but a power line fell down over the only road into or out of the camp trapping everyone inside.
This is significant because on Saturday Alice got to go to a birthday party. Today was father's day. Alice got me a tie, that I felt obliged to wear to church

Bedtime Routine
I was struck this evening with how much our lives must change as Alice grows. I thought I would record the bedtime routine these days for comparison later down the line.
7:30pm Pajamas
There is a very liberal interpretation of the term 'pajamas'. As long as she won't strangle herself in it, get her bed dirty with it, or light herself on fire with it, we call it good.
7:35pm Toothbrushing
A continually improving process. Alice rubs the brush on a couple front teeth and Bobby does the rest.
7:37pm Stories
Usually 2 books, unless we "run out of time" due to Alice's poor choices. She's into library books lately. She gets excited about them as if they were candy.
7:42pm Family prayer
Alice always says the same 4-liner: "Dear Heavenly Father, please bless the food, Jesus Christ, Amen" which is why we often let her bless the food before meals. After she prays for bedtime, Bobby or I will pray for the family and everything else besides the food in our lives :)
7:42pm Sing songs
We turn out the light. Alice lays her head on her "frog prince" stuffed toy and pulls her blanket up around her while we sing three quiet songs of her choice. She almost always chooses "I Am a Child of God", "I Love to See the Temple", and "Give Said the Little Stream" or "Love One Another". She used to sing along with us, but now she's mostly a spectator.
7:45pm Kisses and "good nights" all around
Traditionally, this is when we used to leave her. When she had the pacifier, it was no big deal. When she stopped using the pacifier, she would beg us to come back until she finally cried herself to sleep after 20 minutes or so. That was too much crying for my personal comfort. Through a bit of trial and error (and pure luck), we happened upon the following "Bonus Round" that has helped Alice return to a peaceful, self-soothing, self-initiated sleep in a matter of a few minutes. Much more comfy for all, and well worth the few extra hoops.

I sing one more song, but only if Alice asks for it. She usually asks for it even before Bobby and I have finished the usual three songs. Alice chooses between "Amazing Grace", "I Can Sing a Rainbow", and "You Are My Sunshine", or she requests one of her own. She caught on pretty quickly that "Grace" has several more verses than either of the other two songs. It's her choice most of the time.
7:47pm "Stay one minute"
If Alice asks, I will lie on the floor for one minute counted out in my brain. Heck, by the end of the day, that's all I want to do anyway!
7:48pm "Door open it"
Last kisses and then Alice usually requests that the door be left open. That means the light from the hall spills into her room and lights her bed for the last and final part of the routine...

As soon as I leave the room, Alice hops out of her bed and grabs all the library books she can find. She reads them out loud with all the voices and inflections we use, then she just looks at the pictures. Eventually, her room goes quiet and you know she's sleeping...like this...

CSA Share---June 17th
1 large head of lettuce
1 large bunch of green onions
1 kohlrabi with greens
1 large bunch of beets with greens
Our choice between: pickle-sized cuke, small eggplant, or teeny zucchini
Alice chose the cuke, much to Bobby's delight. We'll chop and freeze the green onions for cooking in soups later. Kohlrabi can be eaten raw and these greens are still tender enough to eat. I like beets a few ways, most of them pickled in some form. I may try a raw beet salad, but only if my sister sends me the recipe AGAIN. Forgive me, Heidi.

CSA Share June 10th
1 huge head of green leaf lettuce
1 huge head of red leaf letttuce
1 small bag of baby salad mix and Asian greens
1 pickle-sized cucumber
1 medium bunch of radishes (I opted out again)
1 large bunch of green onions
We're STILL eating through the red leaf lettuce we got 2 weeks ago and haven't even opened either of the two heads of lettuce we got last week. I'm eating two huge salads a day! Loving it less and less with time, but still enthusiastic about it because good, local lettuce goes away once it warms up a bit.
If only there were a way to preserve fresh lettuce all through the year :(

Playing in the Car
It was a great day for taking photos (and I'm still quite enamored with our new camera) so I turned an afternoon play date into a photo shoot.

Picnic with Friends
We met up with our friends the Demers last Monday for an impromptu picnic and some playground fun. Alice loves, loves, loves the Demers kids but Spencer went all out this time and won her heart. Check out the following movie of Kelsey pushing Alice on the swing and Spencer providing the excitement. I've never heard Alice laugh this hard before.

Playford Ball
I had a great time this year at the Playford Ball! My friend Julia came down from Wisconsin, complete with her regal ball gown and a few girly accessories for me! We bought some costume gloves in town, though decided soon afterwards that a slightly finer material and craftsmanship would be worth the expense next time :) I hosted a little pre-dance reception at our house including cold sandwiches, fresh fruit, raspberry cream puffs, a fruity-sherbet punch, and the first garden peas of the year.
We arrived at the dance just in time for the grand march at the beginning. Unfortunately, there were many more couples than singles and that left very few people for me to ask to dance. Oh well. As the evening progressed, though, more singletons arrived and couples started splitting up more. I got to dance as much as I wanted.
We met up with a few couples from our ward and it was fun to dance with them, too. Every dance I go to, I get more comfortable. The moves are less and less foreign with practice, though I still must be taught everything every time. The hardest thing for me to learn has been eye contact. Stranger or friend, you are expected to sustain eye contact with your dance partner the whole time. Well, not the WHOLE time. Whoever you are currently moving with, whether it's your proper partner or just someone else in your set, eye contact with a smile is the norm. I struggled and struggled with it myself, constantly feeling awkward with all this ocular intimacy, until suddenly I was dancing with someone who wouldn't make eye contact with me at all. Now THAT was awkward! I decided then that I would forget my own "personal space" issues with eye contact and just let it go. Just keep looking and smiling and everyone will keep looking and smiling at you. And you know what? It makes the dancing all the more fun for me.
Each dance is "called" by an expert at the front of the room. The caller walks the couples through the moves in the beginning, then keeps calling out little reminders throughout the dance itself. One of the callers at this dance would instruct us very poorly! When we would shout out for another practice round or a better description of the intended move, this caller would just pick one set of couples to demonstrate the dance for us. It's REALLY, REALLY hard to learn these dances by WATCHING! After a couple frustrating experiences with this caller, I decided to sit out her dances :)
My favorite dance was when Julia was my partner. It was one of the last dances of the night, I think, maybe my last dance. I can't remember now. I do remember laughing most of the way through it, though, and just being carefree. I kept trying to get her to dance with a tall, dark, and handsome youth with smoldering eyes but she just rolled her own eyes at me. We came home after the dance and stayed up late watching the new "Persuasion" in 10-minute chunks on YouTube. Yeah, there are some things I can only do with some friends :)
It was a wonderful evening! A great weekend with Julia. She informed me of an English Country Dancing conference/weekend in my city that happens every spring. We just missed it this year, but have preliminary plans to attend it together next year. Perhaps Mr Tall, Dark and Handsome with Smoldering Eyes will be there too, eh Julia?

Roadtrip with the Girls
I'm exhausted. What a trip! A few friends from church invited me along on a road trip this weekend to go see a mutual friend now living in Ohio. We drove out Friday evening and returned late Saturday night. Friday night, we arrived at Kemily's house about midnight and stayed up even later playing games and chatting. I was surprised yet again at how easy it was to talk and laugh with Kemily like we all had so long ago. How does that happen, I wonder?
Saturday morning we visited an expansive city park (or nature preserve?) nearby. The weather was perfect and the company was just as satisfying. We admired roses, smelled herbs, climbed tree houses, spied a few green frogs, and talked and talked and talked. We talked almost constantly the whole trip. After the park, we made homemade whole wheat tortillas for our burrito lunch. I LOVE talking food chemistry, especially regarding gluten, and MOST especially regarding something so delicious as homemade tortillas. Kemily then surprised us with a little pedicure party! Pampering is a little out of character for me (and all of the ladies in attendance :) ) but I learned a lot. The little girls were all enthralled with our strange behavior...soaking feet in warm water, washing with soap, scrubbing with special tools, then lotion and more lotion. The little girls' feet were practically green with all the scented lotion they lathered on there.
A couple of us napped while the rest of us played MarioKart on the Wii. Then it was time to leave. I was sad to go, but desperately tired. I haven't stayed up that late in at least a decade. Ugh. The car trip home was largely uneventful except for the GPS giving us a circular and scenic tour of Indianapolis. Many, many thanks to Laura and Heidi for doing all the driving. We talked all the way home, too. I have never chatted and talk so extensively and so long with the same group of people in my life. Before this trip, I wouldn't have thought it even possible!
What a wonderful trip.
P.S. As we drove through hundreds of miles in Ohio, Indiana, and finally Illinois in the darkness, I looked out my window and saw millions of fireflies. I am growing to love the midwest more and more the longer we stay here.

Bobby's Sunday Summary
This week feels like it has been a busy one. Although it probably all comes from this past weekend. Susan went on an adventure Friday night and all day Saturday. I will let her tell the details, but suffice it to say that it was Daddy Daughter time. It started out just fine. Alice was not too upset with Susan's leaving and she even went to bed without complaining. Saturday morning I got up cleaned the bathroom went to the grocery store and got started on the day. Then around 11 I started to get a headache and I felt really tired. Well, long story short, I feel good now and apparently 5 hours of movies is about Alice's limit.

Bobby's Sunday Summary
This week has been a fun one. Most of the week has seemed fairly regular.
Thursday was our first Wiggles and Giggles class. It is a gymnastics like class for toddlers. Sorry we don't have any pictures. It was a lot of fun. Alice got to march and dance and all kinds of fun things. She had a really good time.
Saturday was slightly busy, but not too bad. We went to my brother's house for lunch. Alice really loves babies and her little cousin was just what she wanted.

After lunch we went to a blood drive at the church. A member of our ward has a dog that I think is larger then I am. Coincidentally Alice also loved animals, and doggies. This huge dog would be sitting in the grass chewing on a huge stick and alice would pet him, hug him, and give him kisses on his back. Sadly we also didn't get any pictures, but it was quite the sight to see.

CSA share---May 27th and June 3rd
I'm in LOVE with this CSA! Quality, quantity, and communication have all been top-notch. Here's the haul for the last 2 weeks. Sorry for the delay in writing, but we were in St. Louis last Wednesday...see Bobby's most recent entry for picts :)
May 27th
1# organic cornmeal
1 large sack baby salad greens and Asian greens
June 3rd
2 large turnips with greens attached
1 huge head of green leaf lettuce
1 huge head of red leaf lettuce
1 medium bunch of delicate little radishes
1 medium sack of baby lettuce greens and Asian greens
Those heads of lettuce are gorgeous and wet and dirty from the field. What a joy! We left the radishes there...couldn't imagine how to fix them in a tasty way. We'll enjoy baby lettuce salads for 2 days, then we'll break into the big heads to sustain us for the next week or so.
I'll prepare sauteed turnip greens for dinner tonight along with chicken fajitas...peppers and onions were frozen from Bob's CSA last year, whole wheat tortillas made by hand yesterday in the company of 3 charming "helpers" named Alice, Mary, and Spencer. I love making our own tortillas for many reasons. I love to do it with Alice because she's interested in the whole process...not just the eating :) Mary and Spencer proved equally as engaging. They each got their own ball of dough to flatten and play with, but all balls were eventually eaten before they could be cooked. They requested spatulas and stood on their seats in an impromptu doot-da-doo concert, led by Mary. At the end of this video, Alice is proclaiming that she's going to dance to the music. I didn't understand her until it was too late :( so I don't have a video of her dancing to the doot-da-doo music. Suffice it to say, there are few things more entertaining than a little girl leap-dancing to the music of her friends' spatulas.

They requested spatulas and stood on their seats in an impromptu doot-da-doo concert, led by Mary. At the end of this video, Alice is proclaiming that she's going to dance to the music. I didn't understand her until it was too late :( so I don't have a video of her dancing to the doot-da-doo music. Suffice it to say, there are few things more entertaining than a little girl leap-dancing to the music of her friends' spatulas.
